THE ROLE

Birmingham City University invites applications for Senior Lecturer in Computer Networks to support and advance its growth in the networks and cyber security discipline. 

The University focuses on practice-led, problem-based learning, providing access to cutting-edge facilities and real-world experience. Our staff are research active, and engaged externally, maintaining currency and strong links with industry, ensuring students are given an insight into the growing area of networking and networked systems to help them learn and succeed.  

In recognition of this we are looking to recruit exceptional academic staff who are at the cutting-edge of the networking discipline, believe in practice-based learning, demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills, possess exceptional communication skills, and are a team player. 

You will be expected to support teaching & learning for undergraduate/postgraduate modules, provide pastoral care to students, engage in cutting-edge research, and contribute to recruitment and outreach activities. You will develop and deliver engaging teaching and learning as a member of the cybersecurity team in a variety of settings from small group tutorials to large lectures. You will also set and mark assessments, providing timely and constructive feedback to students. 

As a Senior Lecturer, you will be expected to contribute to the subject leadership at module and course levels, managing module and course teams to deliver student outcomes. Further, you will contribute to design and development of curriculum in-line with market trends and cutting-edge within the subject.

Conscious of inclusive practices, you will be expected to provide pastoral support to students assisting with their journey at BCU and equipping them with skills to meet industry demands within networking and networked systems.

Further, you will explore and innovate ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback. You will be expected to engage in cutting-edge research and enterprise activities through own-initiative and collaboration with peers in academia and industry, leading to external funding and publications in reputable venues.

You will possess core networking skillset within different areas including but not limited to Content Networking, Internet of Things (IoT), Software Defined Networking (SDN), and Network Function Virtualisation (NFV). You will have strong experience of teaching within this area at university level and have a proven track record of publishing research articles at reputable venues and an ability to develop research proposals to seek external funding. You will be passionate about supporting students through their educational journey and keen to learn and adopt inclusive practices to engage with students from diverse abilities and backgrounds.  

With core networking knowledge and skills, candidates with expertise in Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and Machine Learning and AI are also encouraged to apply. Membership of a professional bodies (such as the BCS, the IET, or IEEE), industry-recognised certifications such as such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP, Juniper, and professional registration (such as CITP or CEng) is also beneficial.
