Job description

The Department of Chemistry at King’s College London is undergoing a major expansion following investment in chemistry by King’s Interdisciplinary Science and our outstanding results in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. We are seeking a new Senior Lecturer who will play a key role in the development and delivery of new and innovative chemistry curricula; especially in context of interdisciplinary science. They will also be pursuing a forward-looking research programme within the field of computational chemistry, cultivating an internationally prominent research area within the department. They will work with colleagues at King’s and beyond (e.g. at our partner organisation the Francis Crick Institute, other institutions and in industry) exploiting chemistry imaginatively to address societal challenges and leading exciting, collaborative research programmes.

The role holder will help in the development and implementation of departmental strategy, providing leadership, fostering talents of staff and students and a friendly, supportive departmental culture which values collegiality and good citizenship. They will mentor and inspire early career staff and nurture skills and ambitions of their research group. 

A key aspect of the role will be to design and implement a chemistry curriculum for the new King’s Interdisciplinary Science Course. It would be advantageous if the appointee is able to teach physical or computational chemistry at all levels and will enthuse students and staff with a modern approach that goes beyond the confines of the traditional subdiscipline.  

All academic staff are expected to have/obtain a professional qualification for university teaching, promote a collegiate approach, be responsible for health and safety in own area and undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department.  

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria

  • MSc/BSc (or equivalent) in chemistry (or equivalent field) 
  • PhD (or equivalent) level in Chemistry or related subject In-depth understanding of their research to enable the development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field  
  • Experience in obtaining funding and leading a research group 
  • Ability to educate and support PhD students and postdoctoral research staff, and mentor early career staff to ensure their effective development  
  • Ability to actively encourage the development and contribution of diverse perspectives and approaches, enhancing the student experience and creativity in research. 
  • Experience in teaching across class sizes and in leading modules and devising new and effective courses, and in supervising research students with timely completion of their theses  
  • Effective communication skills, to engage audiences, convey conceptual and complex ideas and information, and articulate a research vision 
  • Experience in presenting research in seminars and scientific journals, demonstrating impact to the field and/or beyond  
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workloads, supporting others in workload balance  
  • Desirable criteria 

  • Ability to work co-operatively as part of a team to deliver and develop a modern chemistry curriculum and teach at all levels as well as with an interdisciplinary perspective  
  • Adept at leading and developing talents of others to work across discipline boundaries and work together on fruitful multi-PI grants and research projects
