We are seeking to appoint a virologist at Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor (Reader) level to grow and sustain virology research at the University of Surrey, empowering the University research strategy, namely Science delivering global wellbeing and Lifelong Health. As a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Virology, you will be expected to develop and lead a significant externally funded programme of research in line with the Faculty of Health and Medical Science’s Infection and Immunity research theme strategy, driving new initiatives with potential for interdisciplinary research including collaborations with the School of Biosciences, the new School of Medicine, other University faculties and local partners such as the Pirbright Institute, Royal Surrey County Hospital, Animal Plant and Health Agency, UK Health Security Agency and the Defence Science Technology Laboratory to attract and secure significant research funds.

About the role

Within the School of Veterinary Medicine, you will join the Section of Infection and Immunity within the Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences. We are recognised for our expertise in viral diseases such as rabies, One Health and ecology of zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance, and benefit from significant investments in our Veterinary Pathology Centre. In the role you will:

  • Establish and lead a sustainable research group generating high quality publications and demonstrable impact
  • Secure significant research income to support the work of your research group
  • Mentor postgraduate research students and postdoctoral fellows
  • Initiate cross-disciplinary research collaborations allowing novel, multi-disciplinary insights into animal and human health and disease
  • Make high quality, research-led contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the School, including on the RCVS-accredited BVMSci veterinary degree course.

Our Senior Lecturers and Associate Professors play an important role in advancing research and innovation and influencing the future of the veterinary profession. As such, you will have:

  • An established research profile in the field of virology, including an outstanding and continuing publication record, and demonstration of impact
  • A proven track record of substantial external research grant income generation
  • A proven commitment to delivery of inspiring, engaging learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Experience of supervising PhD students as a principal supervisor.

We wish to create the conditions for success for our new starters in the Vet School, by facilitating their growth and development within our institution. To achieve this, we have established the following guiding principle for all new staff members who are on a local/Guildford contract, effective for all new starters. 

Four-Day On-Campus Commitment: All new staff are expected to be physically present on campus for a minimum of four days each week during their initial four to six months of employment. The duration will vary depending on the individual with minimum duration being 4 months and maximum duration being 6 months. This requirement is adjusted on a pro-rata basis for part-time staff members. For those on remote contract, a separate programme of on-campus commitment is being developed.
