About the opportunity

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor in Biology (Education Focused) to be based at the Camperdown Campus. This is a wonderful opportunity to join the University of Sydney – Australia’s first university – at an exciting and innovative time with the development of a new strategic plan, which will build upon our outstanding global reputation of education and research excellence. SOLES brings together academics from across a broad range of disciplines to understand and solve important global challenges. Key disciplines include ecology, marine biology, microbiology, molecular biology, plant science, soil science animal science and agriculture. This exciting new education-focused role will work closely with Head of School, Deputy Head of School, and the Associate Head of School (Education) within the general outlines of University, Faculty and School strategic directions.  The appointee will develop and deliver first year biology units and provide high level education leadership in SOLES, to ensure excellence in teaching and learning, education research and research training and community engagement.

The successful applicant will have a demonstrated track record in educational excellence in the development and delivery of interactive large first year Biology and Life Science units. Their track record will include success in monitoring and implementing innovations to deliver excellence in educational quality, the student experience and innovation in Biology (Life Science) teaching and learning, including the application of Information and Communications Technologies and novel learning technologies to ensure that SOLES delivers a world-class curriculum for incoming students transitioning from school to university to enable them to thrive in their studies.

The successful applicant will have a nationally and internationally recognised track record in Biology or Life Science and/or Biology education, implementing of scholarly approaches and Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) that enriches the existing strengths and expertise within the School. The successful applicant will also have an outstanding track-record in leadership, assisting in the development of other staff involved in teaching, management and administration and be able to articulate an educational vision within SOLES, across the University of Sydney and beyond.

About you

  • a PhD in Biology or Life Sciences 
  • extensive experience in teaching first year classes, including delivering different types of teaching including lectures, tutorials and laboratory-based practical classes 
  • evidence of contributions to the field of life and biology education research, including publications in appropriate journals with a focus on the enhancement of teaching and learning in the discipline
  • experience in curriculum design, including monitoring the vertical and horizontal alignment of first, second- and third-year units
  • excellent time management and demonstrated written and oral communication skills, 
  • significant experience of successful supervision of Higher Degree Research students, either formally or on a day-to-day basis
  • the ability to work independently as well as being an enthusiastic and successful team leader
  • experience of relevant Work, Health and Safety requirements and management
  • an understanding of and ability to lead and support an academic endeavour from curriculum design to producing leading research and providing a student enabling environment
  • an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector.
  • national or international reputation for excellence in educational design and delivery, including recognition for achieving improved or consistently excellent student outcomes, educational innovation, educational leadership and/or well-regarded pedagogical or disciplinary research
  • record of excellence in educational design and practice within the discipline and beyond, as evidenced through demonstrated impact on student learning, recognition through awards/prizes
  • proven leadership, commitment, and passion for engaging in scholarly and/or pedagogical research activities, recognised at a national level
  • a wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of education in the discipline, School, Faculty and University
  • experience in people leadership within the higher education sector, including demonstrated success in supervising and/or mentoring others towards success.

The commencement level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, and knowledge.
