About the vacancy: The School of Applied Sciences is a highly successful, dynamic and evolving School comprising approx. 100 academic and research staff and 60+ PhD researchers. The School successfully delivers a cohesive portfolio of science courses and CPD which allows multidisciplinary working and encourages a problem-solving mind-set. The School hosts three UWE Research Centres, the Centre for Research in Biosciences (CRIB), the Science Communication Unit (SCU) and the Institute of Biosensing Technology  (IBST). The School has state-of-the-art research facilities including recently refurbished laboratories to support your developing research career.

The School of Applied Sciences runs a number of very successful high recruiting undergraduate and postgraduate biomedical science programmes that focus on the application of science and scientific solutions. The SL Applied Biomedical Sciences will make a significant contribution to teaching on our MSc’s in Health Technology and Biomedical Science and related undergraduate teaching, ensuring that content is innovative, contemporary and future facing. They will support the academic development and delivery of our growing portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate biomedical and health technology programmes.

Senior lecturers contribute to both teaching and research excellence and drive forward research led teaching.  The SL Applied Biomedical Sciences will enhance current strength in applied biomedical research allied to health, disease diagnostics and/or novel healthcare technologies (e.g. smart technologies, point of care testing, biosensors, nanotechnology). Preference will be given to candidates undertaking applied research that will build upon and enhance one or more of these research areas. The successful post holder will develop excellence in research, professional practice, teaching and learning, and other aspects of knowledge exchange and/or knowledge transfer in relation to their chosen area of expertise. This is a fulltime permanent post.

About you:

Candidates will be expected to have a PhD in a biomedical science subject relevant to this post. Preference will be given to candidates that can contribute to our Health technology and Biomedical science programmes, and with a research background in applied biomedical research allied to health, disease diagnostics and/or novel healthcare technologies (e.g. smart technologies, point of care testing, biosensors, nanotechnology).

We are looking for candidates who align to the UWE values and in particular can demonstrate successful leadership skills and motivate groups of people and enable staff to achieve a high level of performance. Successful candidates will demonstrate significant teaching experience and a growing record of high quality, peer-reviewed published outputs. We are looking for candidates with a growing record of securing external research funding, individually or as part of a team. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate evidence of alignment to both our programmes and our current research.

The successful candidate will be supported in this role by an appropriate mentor and will be supported in further developing their teaching, research and leadership skills through the extensive range of the university’s training courses. The School also provides staff development funds to support personal and subject related training for academic staff.

This post is based at our lively Frenchay campus where we have invested in the latest facilities and resources to give both our staff and students access to everything they need to succeed – with £300m having been invested recently on new state-of-the-art learning spaces and accommodation to enhance our offer even further.

Frenchay campus has excellent transport links; as well as being located near the motorway network we are within walking distance of two train stations , our bus terminus connects us to the local bus and metrobus network and we also have a range of cycling and changing facilities, making our campus the ideal place to work for those commuting to Bristol.
