The post of Senior Learning Designer will lead on developing and implementing pedagogical strategies for online programmes and self-paced courses for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the recently formed Aare Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education. The Aare Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education at King’s College London will deliver a high-quality curriculum through flexible and easy-to-access online resources. It will support young people across the African continent, including those displaced by disaster and conflict.  

You will lead the learning design of our new online courses for this important work, adapting King’s Digital’s active learning approach to reach wider audiences across Africa.  

Reporting to the Director of Production, you will work alongside the Learning Design Manager and Senior Learning Designers for Blended & Executive Education and CPD, as part of a team of 13 learning designers.  You will also work closely with the Associate Director, Academic Affairs to agree working practices for significant projects. 

In a busy and collaborate environment, you will have the vision to help shape a pioneering new portfolio, playing a critical role in expanding the reach of King’s to a diverse, global audience.

King’s Digital was formed in 2015 and develops a range of fully online courses and programmes.  You’ll be joining us at an exciting time as we seek to redefine online education and realise King’s strategic ambition of being the leading provider of online and blended learning by 2029.

The role is primarily based at King’s Strand Campus though you may be required to travel to other campuses on occasion. As part of King’s trial of hybrid working, all team members can work remotely for part of the week if they wish.  

This post will be offered on a fixed term contract of two years 

This is a full-time post

• To lead the learning design for projects aligned to the Aare Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education. 
• To lead on developing and implementing effective pedagogical strategies for online and blended programmes across Africa. 
• To lead on the design, adaptation or updating of modules and short courses, including facilitating course planning workshops and designing learning pathways for specific courses or projects. 
• To support project teams to design, deliver and evaluate effective transnational online programmes. 
• To apply good practice from projects delivered across Africa to the wider King’s Digital portfolio, to maximise equity and inclusivity of the student experience. 
• To collaborate with the Associate Director, Academic Affairs to negotiate an agreed approach for programme development and communications between key faculty stakeholders.   
• To supervise a small team of Learning Designers 
• To work closely with the Director of Student Support in King’s Digital to ensure the design and development of programmes reflect their likely delivery and ongoing support requirements and vice versa. 
• To work alongside Senior Learning Designers to develop a process for cataloguing existing lessons and activities so that they can be easily reused or adapted for other projects. 
• To support the Learning Design Manager to build relationships with module facilitators, ensure strategic and pedagogical synergy, and enhance our collaborative culture. 
• Play a key leadership role in project and production teams, bringing together resources as appropriate to facilitate the delivery of content and course materials within time, cost and quality parameters.
• To represent King’s Digital internally and externally, including meetings with faculties, quality assurance colleagues, and cross-college working groups. 

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Essential criteria

1.      First degree in any subject (minimum 2:2 and ideally 2:1 or above or international equivalent) 

2.      Detailed knowledge of principles and research in designing online programmes for developing countries 

3.      Extensive experience designing storyboards or detailed plans for online programmes that are clear for both academics and content developers 

4.      Extensive experience training or supporting academics, course tutors or online teachers 

5.      Experience of educational technology platforms and design tools, including Moodle and FutureLearn 

6.      Experience of training, developing or managing creative professionals 

7.      Ability to recommend improvements to pedagogical design to improve student engagement and address digital discrimination 

8.      Ability to select and present complex ideas clearly and creatively in a logical, coherent way, for a range of audiences 

9.      Excellent communication (written and verbal) and relationship management skills, including negotiation and influencing 

10.    A strong commitment to diversity, inclusivity and accessibility
