Senior Language Tutor / Academic Leader

Updated: 2 months ago
Location: Manchester, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 08 Mar 2024

We’re looking for a Senior Language Tutor / Academic Leader who can and wants to work in a Centre where the role is likely to be both varied and challenging.

Whilst our academic year can be dominated by our very large Pre-sessional programmes, we also juggle the in-year academic language and skills, our contributions to Foundation programmes, and intensive general English courses (to name but just three), and you’ll help us make sure that all our courses and their students – not just the intense summer - also thrive.

Therefore, whilst your first year with us is very likely to involve a co-ordination role on our Pre-sessional programmes, the following years could see work on any of our other areas.

You’d be joining what we really hope is a ‘good’ Centre. From an external perspective, the last two British Council inspections have awarded us the highest or joint-highest number of strengths compared to our University peers. We therefore approach this year’s BALEAP visit with a healthy combination of confidence and slight nerves. Internally, a post-Covid review of the Centre was extremely positive about both what we currently do and also our plans for the future. Overall, there is a general institutional narrative of further enabling and supporting us to achieve what is seen as a core University need.

We’d also like to think you’d be joining a group of people who are continuously questioning the ‘what’, ‘how’ and ‘why’ in our area. We obviously don’t always have pedagogical and organisational agreement, but what we generally know is that we can’t stand still. In this context, the need to ruthlessly and honestly prioritize time is a given, and again, you’ll need to be comfortable with that.

What we need is a colleague who will genuinely enjoy all these challenges - people who will complete tasks when there are always reasons not to, who can find good judgement when difficult situations make that very tricky and/or who know that something like CPD is so obvious it needn’t be mentioned.

If the above has piqued your interest, then we look forward to hearing from you.

Interviews will be held on Monday 25th March 2024.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
