The MRC Epidemiology Unit is seeking to appoint a Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer to play an important role within the Unit's IT Team.

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is a department within the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge and studies the genetic, developmental and environmental factors causing obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders. The Unit has developed and maintains its own bespoke IT infrastructure and services. These are tailored to the needs of the Unit and are critical for the delivery of its scientific mission

The Unit IT Team provides computing facilities for approximately 200 staff, students and visiting fellows located across four main sites. The team provides technical support services to the user base, the main components of which are: business services, remote site support, networking, private network management, scientific compute and storage.

The Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer will be the Windows Server expert for the IT Team and will lead on supporting the associated infrastructure. An important aspect of the role will be to further develop existing procedures around Windows Server and Domain administration. The role holder will be expected to lead on enhancing existing methods and developing new approaches. They will also provide technical subject matter expertise and be responsible for the associated policies which provide the standards and protocols for the IT team to follow. Other important aspects of the role include administering multiple MS SQL Server Always On Availability Group Clusters as well as further development of the Unit's "Secure Research Domain" a safe-haven environment used to store and analyse PID.

The successful candidate will have expert knowledge of all aspects of modern Windows Server operating systems along with associated technologies including Active Directory and Group Policy. Additional essential experience will include the administration of MS SQL Server and VMWare ESXi. Knowledge of VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) using VMWare Horizon is also expected.

An element of out of hours work and the ability to be "on-call" will be required for this position to address critical infrastructure and environmental / datacentre incident management and response / escalation to vendors, facilities management companies and other support contacts as appropriate. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are critical for the role. The role holder must have a helpful and positive manner, being able to communicate clearly on a wide range of technical issues with people of all capabilities.
