Community Based Medicine (CBM) is a strand in the MBChB programme during which medical students learn about medicine from a Primary Care perspective. The majority of CBM teaching that students receive occurs on placement in General Practices across the West Midlands and beyond. Birmingham Medical School is looking or a three session a week Senior Clinical Tutor to act as a module lead within the CBM strand of the MBChB. This is an excellent opportunity to make an impact on undergraduate teaching and help shape innovation in medical education.
The postholder will be responsible for the effective development and implementation of the Year 1 CBM module/component of the MBChB Programme. Although there may be limited teaching opportunities, the focus of this role is ensuring that the content of the module complies with university requirements in terms of assessment, teaching materials and support for tutors and students.
The postholder will also make a substantial contribution to the strategic development of the CBM curriculum across years for this in the context of vertical and horizontal integration with other parts of the MBChB programme. It requires the post holder to work with relevant professional services staff as well as other academics to produce, develop and integrate CBM teaching materials.
Main Duties
Education
You will contribute across the range of teaching and learning activities:
- making a significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of the subject that advances teaching through the enhancement of practice, the development of teaching resources and/or through practice-based research;
- leading on the management and the development of approaches to teaching and learning, including designing innovative approaches and supporting colleagues to use them in the subject area or institution;
Person Specification
- Demonstrated excellence in Learning and Teaching, and Management and administration.
- This is a clinical academic post and as such the postholder should be a practising GP (MBChB, MRCGP) and be fully registered with a licence to practise with the GMC and participate in clinical appraisal and revalidation. It would be desirable for the post holder to have postgraduate qualification in Education e.g. PGCert or higher qualification.
- For this role, the postholder should ideally be available on Thursdays to support the Year 1 CBM team.
