The Informatics Platform at the John Innes Centre (JIC) is hiring a Senior Bioinformatician.

About the John Innes Centre and the Informatics Platform:

The JIC is an independent, international centre of excellence in plant and microbial sciences. We nurture a creative, curiosity-led approach to answering fundamental questions in bioscience, and translate that knowledge into societal benefits.

The Informatics Platform provides support in bioinformatics and scientific computing.

The role:

The successful candidate will join a highly skilled and motivated team working at the interface between science and computing. The position provides an exciting opportunity to work on cutting edge research in biology, exploring new technological approaches, and applying them to challenging real world problems in partnership with world leading scientists. They will work with JIC research groups on scientific projects and provide bioinformatics expertise throughout a project lifecycle, from grant writing through data analysis to manuscript preparation. This will include guidance on the use of tools and pipelines, interpretation of their results and, where necessary, carrying out analyses directly. The successful candidate will also train and mentor JIC staff and students in computational biology, both through development and delivery of structured courses as well as informal one to one coaching.

The ideal candidate

Candidates must hold a PhD in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Computational Biology or related discipline, as well as have a broad range of expertise in management and computational analysis of biological data. They should be comfortable with Linux command line shell and possess good knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g., Python, or C++). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team are essential for this position. Previous experience of providing training in bioinformatics is desired.
