This post will be within Cellular Genetics Informatics team that provides efficient access to cutting-edge analysis methods, environments and pipelines for Cellular Genetics programme .

About You

We are looking for a Senior Bioinformatician - Data Curator who will help us create a community data resource containing large collections of single-cell data in the count matrix format. Funded by Chan Zuckerberg Initiative this project will be based on the cellxgene tool (also funded by CZI), which aims to support scalable and accessible visualization of the individual single-cell datasets. cellxgene has accumulated a lot interest in the research community and is currently being used by many research groups to visualise their single cell data. One example is the Covid19 Cell Atlas , initiated and maintained by the Cellular Genetics Programme of the Sanger Institute, which has been a major contributor to this effort and inspired product directions. 

This role will be focused on organising and curating currently available data on Covid19 Cell Atlas and on similar resources such as Cambridge Cell Atlas and Single-Cell Expression Atlas to encourage interoperability and visualisation of the data count matrices. 

This role is a one year post, however may be extended subject to funding.


Essential Skills
  • Degree in Bioinformatics or related fields 

  • Programming experience in Unix shell, Python or R 

  • Data curation/annotation experience, or significant understanding 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills 

  • Attention to detail

  • Confident at communicating with all levels of staff verbally and written 

  • Exceptional organiser with the ability to prioritise and manage workload 

  • Ability to work independently, but also able to develop collaborative working relationships with collaborators and other team members


Ideal Skills
  • PhD or equivalent work experience in related field 

  • Knowledge of biology including basic anatomy and cell types 

  • Experience of researching unfamiliar topics in scientific literature
