The Scientific Computing Engineer is a vital role as part of the School Professional Services Team with responsibility for the provision and delivery of high-quality scientific computing support for education, industrial engagement, and research activities within the School. Working under the direction of the Scientific Computing Manager to implement the highest standards of scientific computing service to academic staff and students, the role holder will proactively identify ways to improve service to meet day to day changing demands in a complex higher education environment.

This post is critical with regards to service delivery across all scientific computing aspects of School activity.

Your priorities will include:

  • Lead on the design, engineering, and support of School-specific technical information technology infrastructure, using either in house capabilities or external partners where appropriate, relating to all aspects to meet the needs of service users within the School where: o products and services are defined as scientific and ‘out-of-scope’ of Digital Technology Services (DTS) o service users are defined as academic and research staff and students within the School and individuals engaging in external facing School activities e.g., industrial engagement
  • Work effectively with the Scientific Computing Manager to ensure that the School Scientific Computing team is structured appropriately, provides an excellent service to staff and students

Who we’re looking for:

  • Graduate qualification in an appropriate subject or equivalent relevant experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of the key issues facing higher education in Scotlandand how they relate to the University
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to apply technical knowledge to solvingoperational challenges and ability to improvise creative technical solutions
  • Ability to manage a small or medium HPC facility. Ability to advise on use of such a system and other resources to support scientific research computing
  • High-level knowledge of Windows, Linux and Mac Operating Systems in server and personal computing contexts
