The opportunity

We are seeking a motivated professional to work within our Library Services Department as Scholarly Communications Manager.

Based at our London College of Communication (LCC) Building in Elephant and Castle, you will manage and develop scholarly communications services in the university, in relation to the publishing and dissemination of research outputs, open access, metrics, intellectual property and copyright, including the management and development of UAL Research Online (UALRO), the university’s open access research repository.

Specific duties will include:-

  • Managing and developing UAL Research Online and associated services, maintaining policies and workflows
  • Supporting and advising the research community, actively engaging with researchers and building relationships to understand research support requirements, including one-one consultancy, and contribution to training programmes for PhD students and Early Career Researchers
  • Monitoring Publisher APC (Article Processing Charge) dashboards for approving publications supported by UAL Policies and funds and request and issue ISBNs as appropriate (upon request).
  • Line management of our Scholarly Communications Assistant
  • Monitoring national and international developments in scholarly communications and advising the research community of necessary actions, including through the relevant research committees.
  • Championing the arts perspective on scholarly communications on national forums and bodies, responding to consultations and surveys as required

This is a full time, fixed term post for 1 year while we review our Researcher Support provision in light of UALs Strategy and our Research Strategy delivery action plan . There is an expectation that the appointed post-holder will work the majority of their time on-site and will frequently visit other UAL sites to meet Researchers.


About you

Successful candidates should be:

  • Aware of creative arts research in the Higher Education (HE) context, and the significance of the Research Excellence Framework (REF)
  • Aware of best practice in repository management, including Scholarly communication tools
  • Knowledgeable on repository software; relevant metadata standards and of Intellectual Property Retention (IPR) in relation to repositories
  • Able to build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders

And have:

  • A background in Higher Education and Research – supplemented by a degree in any subject – with demonstrative understanding of the Research journey beyond degree level including PhD study.
  • Understanding of open access principles, mechanisms and developments relating to open access in the sector
  • Ability to Line Manage staff
  • Able to communicate effectively while adapting the message for a diverse audience in an inclusive and accessible way
