Samir Shamma Associate Professorship in Islamic Numismatics, Epigraphy and Material Culture

Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and St Cross College, Oxford

Permanent, full time

Grade 36S:  £52,815 - £70,918 per annum

The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, in association with St Cross College, invites applications for the post of Samir Shamma Associate Professorship in Islamic Numismatics, Epigraphy and Material Culture, to start from 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We are seeking an outstanding scholar and teacher who studies Islamic numismatics, epigraphy and material culture with strong expertise in at least two of these areas. This is an exciting and demanding post in which you will conduct advanced research; teach, supervise and examine in the field of Islamic art and architecture at both undergraduate and graduate level; and play a part in the administrative work of the Faculty and College.

Associate Professor is the main academic career grade at Oxford with a focus on research and teaching, spanning the full range of professor grades in the USA.  There is considerable flexibility in the organisation of duties with three eight-week undergraduate teaching terms and generous sabbatical leave to balance teaching and research (please see the Benefits, Terms and Conditions section for further details of sabbatical leave).  This post will be held in conjunction with a Fellowship at St Cross College.  The Fellowship carries no teaching duties for the College, but the Fellow will have responsibility for pastoral care of graduate students at the College, to act as College Advisor for graduate students, and to participate in the governance and administration of the College.

We particularly welcome applications from women and from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in senior academic positions at Oxford.  If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognising that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

To make informal enquiries about the post, please contact Alain George, IM Pei Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture ([email protected]) .

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application.  Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post.  Your application will not be considered without a supporting statement.  Interviews will be held on 29 February 2024.
