£27924 to £40927 per annum, (pro rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience (minimum £31406 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

This role is part of the Rights Lab, a University Beacon of Excellence. The role-holder will deliver research within the Rights Lab’s Data and Measurement programme, as part of its flagship Earth Observation work. The role-holder will be part of innovative research within ongoing and new projects. Current funders/partners include the EPSRC, UK Space Agency, United Nations Development Programme, Airbus Intelligence and Experian). They will work collaboratively with other researchers and external stakeholders as part of a large and vibrant team and will focus on the use of geospatial data to understand human rights and sustainable development risks and vulnerabilities.  

Working with Professor Doreen Boyd, the role-holder will use remote sensing for Earth Observation data, and related geospatial data and techniques (e.g., machine learning), to reveal activities associated with human rights abuses and damage to sustainable development. The team compiles, synthesises and integrates geospatial data to better understand patterns in EO data that can be attributed to human rights and labour issues. The sectors of interest include forests, mining, fishing and construction.  

This work is international in scope, and covers a wide range of different substantive issues and approaches connected to forms of exploitation and human rights contexts. Applications are therefore welcome from researchers who wish to bring a particular EO data science perspective, method, or approach to the work of the programme. The role-holder will also have the opportunity to shape a new research agenda moving forward, based in the individual’s expertise and interests and in alignment with the programme’s research strategy. The person appointed will have the opportunity to use their initiative and creativity to identify new project areas. The role-holder will develop their own new funding applications and impact, and contribute to the writing of research outputs. 

The post is offered on a fixed term contract until 31 July 2023. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours per week) ; however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 29 hours per week).
