RIGHT Lecturer in Computer Vision and Deep Learning for Digital Humanities

We currently have a vacancy for a lecturer in a newly established Responsible Digital Humanities (RIGHT) laboratory. The RIGHT Lab will be the first of its kind in the UK and will seek to become a regional, national, and international leader in the field of Digital Humanities (DH). RIGHT’s priorities will be to advance the field of DH; to foster strong collaborations nationally, regionally, and across the different faculties of the University of Wolverhampton (UoW); and to create tools, datasets and guidelines for ethical and responsible DH which leverages research in the branch of AI known as Natural Language Processing (NLP). The emphasis on responsible DH will make it a unique, pioneering hub for advancing human-centred research at the interface of AI and the Humanities. The laboratory will empower research in the Humanities with methods from AI while making the Deep Learning models used in NLP fairer, less discriminatory, and also more accountable, sustainable, and transparent through insights about ethics and responsibilities from the Humanities.

RIGHT will harness expertise in NLP, corpus-based methods, and Deep Learning to deliver internationally leading research in Humanities disciplines such as Sikh and Panjabi Studies, History, Law, Literature, and Film Studies, which has impact far beyond academia. It will develop a flagship DH initiative for Panjabi with the Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies at UoW. RIGHT will be situated within the Research Group in Computational Linguistics (RGCL), which has a strong track record of NLP and DH research, prestigious national and International collaborations, and strong collaborative links within UoW. RIGHT will be supported by the University’s Statistical Cybermetrics Research Group (SCRG).

The Computer Vision Lecturer is expected to explore the similarities and differences in the ways that humans and computers see and visualise the world around them, with the aims of using perceptions from the humanities to inform computer vision models and informing humanities researchers about state-of-the-art machine vision technologies that could be used to further advance humanities research.
