Researcher within Reactor technology

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 15 Aug 2022

About the position

The Department of Chemical Engineering has a vacancy for a researcher for one year in the reactor technology group.

Starting date for the position is as soon as possible, and latest 01.01.2023.

About the project

In this project the candidate will use an existing experimental facility to perform investigations on single drop and single bubble breakage by use of the image analysis technique. To understand the different breakage mechanisms, fluid particles with different properties (e.g., viscosity, density, size, etc) and system properties like interface tension will be analyzed. At least 3-4 different oils with different properties should be evaluated and a comparison with bubble breakage mechanisms should be performed. These data will be used for improved understanding of the phenomena and for model development.  Software for the image analysis has been developed in previous work. Development of improved and faster analysis by use of Machine Learning might be an option.

The experimental data gathered must be evaluated by statistical analysis to ensure sufficient accuracy. Data should be gathered for each breakage mechanism separately. After a sufficient database has been established, universal breakage kernel functions should be developed enabling simulations of phase separation equipment in the framework of the population balance model.  Possible kernel function parameters may be fitted to the experimental data.

The candidate will work in team , and the tasks may be tailored to the applicant as purely experimental, purely theoretical or a combination depending on scientific background, experience, and interests.

A main goal is to make the data available for the industry partners in the form of innovative population balance model breakage kernels.

Your immediate leader is Professor Hugo A Jakobsen.

Duties of the position

  • Run experiments in an existing facility at IKP
  • Perform image analysis of raw data and statistical data analysis
  • Develop novel breakage kernel functions validated by use of the data
  • Write scientific publications
