Researcher within Developing High-Level Modelling Software

About the position

We have a vacancy for a one year employment for a software developer at the Process Systems Engineering Group (PSE) at Department of Chemical Engineering, NTNU.

Preferable starting date of the position is as soon as possible and within 01.09.2021.

PSE at NTNU is developing high-level modelling software. The project uses ontologies at its top end. They are employed throughout the software suite for defining the mathematical equations describing the behaviour of the ontology-defined elements and much more. We are members of several consortia: two European Horizon 2020 projects and two Norwegian Research Council projects.

The successful candidate will thus get in contact with a variety of people in Europe both in research and development institution, primarily with SINTEF in Norway, but also Helmholtz, Fraunhofer and DBFZ in Leipzig in Germany, various companies including AKZO, Airbus, and several smaller companies, Universities TU-Delft and Vrije Universitet Brussel and others.

The project is done in close collaboration with SINTEF Ocean’s IT group. The software is build in Python and uses Qt’s interfaces for the user interfaces. We thus seek a person who is professional in Python and has preferably a background in pysics.

Duties of the position

  • Adapt existing Python modules to meet the new design specifications.
  • Implement new components.
  • Generate educational material explaining the utilisation of the software suite.
  • Get involved in the application projects, specifically the modelling of coatings.
  • Participate in discussing designs.

Besides Pyhton and Qt, we also use numerical solver environments like NumPy, MatLab and Modelica and software solutions like Docker.

We use a significant portion of our time to learn about new technologies with the objective to improve steadily our ability to solve ontology-based computational engineering problems.

Required selection criteria

  • An MSc, PhD degree in Computer Science, Physics or a closely related subject
  • Excellent background in software development, with excellence in
  • object-oriented programming with focus on Python
  • constructing user interfaces with PyQt
  • Good written and oral English and/or Norwegian language skills

We offer

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of researcher (code 1108/1109) is normally remunerated at gross from NOK xxx xxx – xxx xxx before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU

The position is subject to external funding.
