Researcher - Carbon Emissions and Sustainability in the Food System

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly self-motivated and driven postdoctoral research associate with a background in chemical/energy/mechanical engineering (or related disciplines). The project needs a strong candidate and experience in collecting and analysing data on carbon emissions and sustainability in the food system in the South Yorkshire region, conducting detailed analysis and evaluating alternative systems for food producers. The researcher will focus on the research and analysis of energy systems used in the food system to deliver the tasks defined in the SYSC food system theme, producing a roadmap to achieving a values-based, circular food system in SY for use by policymakers and businesses. We are looking for independent researchers who have demonstrated their ability to perform and ideally publish high-quality peer-reviewed research (consideration will be given for other reporting for candidates from the industry).

The Team

The Research England Development (RED) fund provides a unique opportunity to connect research knowledge from two major HE institutions (Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield) with regional stakeholders, forming the South Yorkshire Sustainability Centre (SYSC) project. The SYSC will bring together researchers, local authorities, businesses and third-sector partners from across South Yorkshire to drive forward sustainability through knowledge exchange and co-design of solutions to regional & global sustainability challenges.

The National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering (NCEFE) from Sheffield Hallam University was born from the partnership funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the European Regional Development Fund and Sheffield City Region, and significant contributions from some of its 40 industry partners. NCEFE aims to deliver world-class capability, innovative sustainable food systems, technology-led solutions and food and drink sector competitiveness. NCEFE engages and collaborates with the industry sector and academic partners at regional, national and global levels to generate sustainable, innovative solutions to real-world problems.
