About the role

In Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), we research and teach structures, geotechnics, water management, air quality, and infrastructure systems. Our CEE Structures and Materials laboratories are top-class testing facilities supporting cutting-edge research and teaching in structures and infrastructure systems. The facility supports multi-scale testing under static, dynamic, and impact loading with high-speed capabilities, and at various environmental and temperature conditions. We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and focused individual with experience in mechanical testing and instrumentation processes, as well as experience of leadership in a technical environment.

The post holder will be responsible for managing the CEE Structures and Materials laboratory and ensuring their safe, efficient operation of teaching and research activities; the former includes the running of undergraduate and postgraduate taught and research projects with experimental content; the latter encompasses the use of lab equipment for the delivery of research grants, contracts and consultancy work, with a particular focus on large-scale experiments representative for civil structures and infrastructure.

The post holder will play an essential role in the day-to-day running of the CEE Structures and Materials laboratory and will be responsible for identifying the maintenance needs of the various testing frames within the lab; the post holder will participate in the research activities of the staff and students using the CEE Structures and Materials laboratory and will be expected to contribute to the research output of the laboratory.

The post holder will oversee other members of the school technical support team and will contribute to their appraisal process. They will have responsibility in advising regarding planning technical resource management and producing continuity plans with respect to testing facilities for the school. The post holder will act as the School Safety Advisor, ensuring school compliance with the University Health & Safety policy and regulations,

This position will provide opportunities to work alongside aa diverse technical team, attend research seminars and build professional contacts across the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£34,980) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£36,024).
