This is an Open-Ended position for a technician who will provide technical and administrative support to ensure the smooth running of the Advanced Processing Laboratory for Professor Grant and his research group.
With a background in laboratory or fabrication/manufacturing environment you will be self-motivated, able to plan and deliver set or self-identified tasks to time. You will have hands-on experience of (i) facility design/operation, (ii) health and safety management systems, risk assessment and associated electronic record keeping; (iii) CAD/CAM systems; (iv) ability to identify improvements and efficiencies and take positive action without supervision; (v) understanding of basic temperature and pressure instrumentation; (vii) ability to manage own day-to-day activities, (vi) ability to contribute to a problem-solving team through the contribution of ideas, and (vii) present and engender a friendly and welcoming professional working environment.
The role involves overall oversight and co-ordination of the Advanced Processing Laboratory at the Begbroke Science park, seeking to ensure its smooth and safe running for the approximately 20 users, spanning research students and professional scientists. The role provides a friendly and helpful first point of contact for new users and for instructing users in the protocols in operation, especially in relation to health and safety. The role also provides ad hoc advice and support to users. The facility includes a number of small bays containing laboratory scale processing or fabrication equipment (e.g. for Li ion batteries). The equipment requires maintenance and occasional modification and replacement. The facilities are served by various utilities including inert gas supplies that require monitoring and action (e.g. replacing gas bottles and liaising with suppliers). The role involves disposal of items from the laboratory and liaising with equipment and consumables suppliers, and various maintenance and repair visits. Basic fabrication is often required to build jigs or rigs, tables and stands, etc and makes use of the departmental workshops, 3D printers, etc.
