About the position

At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, IT Division, there is a vacancy for a full time, temporary, technical position in Research Software Engineering (RSE)/research computing with focus on High Performance Computing (HPC). The position will commence as soon as possible. This contract of employment ends on 2023.08.31.

This position is aimed at those who want to work at the intersection of information technology, research, and research methods, together with the Group for Research Support at the IT Division at NTNU. The focus for this position is to strengthen the group’s capabilities within scalability, optimization and modelling for numerical HPC applications.  

The position is part of the High Performance Computing (HPC) team of the IT Division at NTNU.  Our HPC Team partake in the operations and advanced user support of the national HPC infrastructure of Norway, under the mandate of Uninett Sigma2.

The main focus of the new position will be the national HPC resources administered by Uninett Sigma2.

The position is intended located to Trondheim, but it will also be possible fill the position if you are located in Ålesund or Gjøvik and can work from the NTNU campuses there. A high degree of use of home office is possible for this position, but the details around this must be discussed and agreed upon in the specific case – and some percentage of presence at one of the NTNU campuses will be expected.  

You will report to the group leader at NTNU IT Research Support (NTNU IT faggruppe for Forskningsstøtte), which is part of the IT Development Section of the IT Division (NTNU IT Utviklingsseksjonen).

Duties of the position

  • Working on the scientific software and user support for HPC within the teams that operate and maintain:
    • the national HPC and storage systems, FRAM (35 000 cores), Saga (10 000 cores), Betzy (172 000 cores), NIRD (11 PiB), (100+ GPUs)
    • the NTNU institutional level HPC resource Idun (3100 cores and 200+ GPUS)
  • Possible involvement in collaborations such as PRACE, EuroHPC, LUMI and NEIC projects.
  • Possible involvement with research groups at NTNU or national level with supporting HPC.
  • Taking part in the group’s HPC user support activities.
  • Writing internal and external documentation.
  • Organizing and conducting training courses.

Required selection criteria

  • Higher education, minimum Master’s level, Phd level encouraged. This can be compensated for by documented relevant work experience
  • Proficiency in C and/or C++ programming - or equivalent
  • High programming competence with using numerical computation or simulation within relevant fields
  • Experience with the MPI communication standard
  • Experience with the Linux operating system
  • Experience with HPC, either as a user or an operator
  • Experience with the operation and debugging of complex IT systems
  • Good written and oral English, and basic Norwegian language skills

Preferred selection criteria

  • Knowledge of OpenMP
  • Experience with Python, Julia and Fortran
  • Experience within AI, statistics, neural networks, data science etc.
  • Experience with scalability and performance optimization of HPC systems
  • Experience with working in teams of different size, and distributed teams
  • Experience with version control
  • Experience with giving technical instruction courses
  • Experience with batch queuing systems
  • Experience with accelerator technologies within numerical HPC
  • Norwegian language skills

Salary and conditions

Position as overingeniør (code 1087) or senioringeniør (code 1181) depending on qualification.The gross salary for the position of overingeniør normally remunerated at gross from NOK 483 700 – 640.000 and NOK 524 900 – 686.000 for senioringeniør before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria's in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
