Research Scientist in the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology Dr. Kristin Gunsalus

Updated: 3 months ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 22 Feb 2024

Description

The Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking to appoint a full-time Research Scientist in the Chemical and Functional Genomics Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Kristin Gunsalus.

The laboratory’s research addresses emergent concerns that pose considerable threats to human health and the environment. The Research Scientist will be responsible for identifying and characterizing novel biocontrol agents to manage the spread of the Red Palm Weevil (RPW) pest, a major threat to palm trees. The research project involves screening a collection of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains for a virulence phenotype against RPW larvae, isolating any toxic factors identified in the screen, and characterizing them at the molecular level. The long-term goal of the project is to develop treatment with Bt or its natural products as a bio-organic alternative to RPW pest management. Responsibilities will include design and execution of research activities; oversight and management of a small team of researchers; participation in regularly scheduled lab meetings; preparation and submission of high-quality reports, grant proposals, and manuscripts for publication in research journals; presentation of research at conferences; and coordination with local partners at NYUAD and in the agricultural sector.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology or Microbiology with at least 5 years of experience in a research lab. The candidate is expected to have experience in Microbiology and Molecular Biology techniques, extensive experience in handling and culturing insect larvae, and a clear demonstration of leading projects to completion via high-quality publications.

The terms of employment include a highly competitive salary, housing allowance, and other benefits. To be considered, all applications must be submitted through Interfolio and should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, and the names of two references, all in PDF format. If you have any questions, please send your inquiries to [email protected] .
