Research Laboratory Coordinator (Fixed Term)

Updated: about 1 month ago
Location: Cambridge, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 29 Apr 2021

The Merkle laboratory are seeking a Research Laboratory Coordinator to provide technical and organisational support essential to the smooth operation of the Merkle laboratory, by coordinating these activities with the PI (Florian Merkle,

) to help ensure that research aims are met on budget and in a timely manner.

The Merkle laboratory uses emerging technologies to harness the complementary strengths of animal models and human pluripotent stem cell-based models in order to understand the mechanistic basis of common human neurological diseases. We focus on obesity and neurodegenerative disease, both of which are diseases of the brain that have a strong genetic basis, and for which there is a large, unmet need for new treatments. Identifying disease mechanisms and therapeutic targets are of central importance to our Department. To study these diseases, we use a combination of CRISPR gene editing, single-cell RNA sequencing, high content live and fixed cell imaging, and more standard molecular and cellular techniques. We also have a research programme that focuses on basic stem cell biology, specifically the selective pressures that exist in vitro and how these lead to the emergence of recurrent culture-acquired mutations. These efforts are funded by the MRC, Wellcome Trust, New York Stem Cell Foundation, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, some of which provide training opportunities (e.g. open science and computational biology) for career development and an opportunity to interact with other world-class laboratories.
