Background

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking both experimental and numerical studies within a specific research project funded by EPSRC.

The successful candidate will join the School of Engineering. This is a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of novel low carbon power technologies and contribute to sustainable and zero emission transport. We are looking for highly motivated researchers to join the research team working on the EPSRC project involving both zero carbon fuel testing and novel internal combustion engine development.

Main Duties

  • Develop novel testing rigs for zero carbon fuel tests and engine/emission tests
  • Develop associated models and use experimental data to validate
  • Develop new research ideas in the relevant research areas
  • Support other PhDs experimental research projects in the relevant research areas
  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models and test rigs within the specific research project 
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and simulations
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters

Person Specification

  • PhD degree (or near to completion) in area of Mechanical Engineering or similar, with a research focus on thermofluid behaviours and combustion of fuels, and international combustion engine research
  • Proficiency in building new engine testing rigs independently, and ability to conduct experimental study in a mechanical engineering lab environment
  • Proficiency in using different optical diagnostic measurement devices, and engine performance and emission testing devices
  • High level analytical capability to conduct CFD simulation and/or engine modelling
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to a large academic audience
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively 
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
