The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

We are seeking to appoint a pathogen genomics researcher who will work within Prof Kat Holt’s team to investigate transmission of Klebsiella pneumoniae in neonatal units in Africa using bioinformatics and genomic epidemiology. The successful applicant will lead the analysis and reporting for one study, and support bioinformaticians working on similar studies in Africa and Asia by helping to establish a Community of Practice on investigating pathogen transmission in neonatal units in low-resource settings.

This is an exciting opportunity for a microbial bioinformatics expert to apply their skills in the global health field, within a collaborative and supportive team based at LSHTM (see holtlab.net). You will have opportunities for career development, including support to develop your own research ideas and proposals, and to gain experience in MSc-level teaching and/or supervising research students (depending on your interests). This is a one-year post but will have potential for extension, depending on funding.

The successful applicant will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic, relevant experience in genomic analysis of bacterial pathogens, including use of command-line tools for sequence analysis, phylogenetics and phylodynamics, evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, evidence of good organizational skills, including effective time management. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and fixed term until 30 April 2025 and is available from 1 May 2024.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale Grade 6 in the range £43,947 - £49,908 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Applications should be made on-line via our jobs website . Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to [email protected] .  LSHTM has a Hybrid Working Framework, which alongside agreed service requirements, enables teams to work more flexibly (if the role allows), promoting a greater wellbeing and work/life balance.

The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as "Please see attached CV" will not be considered acceptable.

Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is committed to being an equal opportunities employer. We believe that when people feel respected and included, they can be more creative, successful, and happier at work.
