Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322. With potential progression once in post to £42,792 a year.   As the funding for this post is external, the maximum salary that can be offered is £33,797.

We are recruiting two full-time Research Fellows to work as part of a team on a new 3-year research programme into what happens to older people and care staff when care homes close.  The successful candidates will be full members of the research team, undertaking a literature review, interviews and focus groups, analysing surveys and outcomes data, and contributing to national guidance and other policy/practice outputs so that our research makes a difference to people’s lives. 

Candidates should have experience of applied research, a PhD or equivalent, or close to completion, and a commitment to research that makes a difference.  They should strong research skills, an ability to communicate complex information clearly, organisational skills, lots of initiative and a desire to influence policy, practice and people’s lives. 

Main Duties

Supporting the delivery of the NIHR-funded research programme (‘Achieving closure?’  Improving outcomes when care homes close)
Contributing to the submission of applications for NHS research ethics/local Research and Development approvals
Contributing to the project’s literature review, interviews, focus groups, visits to case study sites and collection of outcomes data
Collating, analysing and interpreting data
Applying knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
Drafting and disseminating findings for academic publication and for policy/practice outputs
Undertaking management/administration arising from the project
Contributing to Departmental/School research-related activities and seminars
Dealing with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
Promoting equality and valuing diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture

Person Specification

PhD in a relevant area and discipline, or close to completion, or equivalent qualifications
Experience of undertaking applied research (including literature reviewing, interviews and focus groups, surveys and/or analysis of outcomes data)
High level analytical capability
Ability to communicate complex information clearly
Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
Contribute to the planning and organising of the research project
Working independently as well as part of a team
Co-ordinate own work with others to ensure effective team-working
Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, with an ability to use a range of communication skills and strategies to gain commitment to action.
Strong facilitation skills, including meetings and workshops, using a range of online platforms and face-to-face.
A high degree of initiative, personal judgement, resourcefulness, flexibility and a self-motivating approach.
The ability to complete tasks based on only broad direction and with minimum supervision.
