Full time starting salary is normally in the range £31,406 to £40,927, with potential progression once in post to £43,434.

One full-time postdoctoral research fellow position is available via LifeArc funded project to Dr Sovan Sarkar and Prof. Timothy Barrett at the University of Birmingham. The postholder will be investigating the biomedical implications of autophagy in rare, childhood-onset neurodegenerative disorders using human pluripotent stem cell-based neuronal models.

The candidate is expected to undertake the cell culture of human pluripotent stem cells (including human embryonic stem cells and human induced pluripotent stem cells) and their differentiation into neural precursors and neurons, neuronal cell culture, molecular cloning, cell biology techniques including immunoblotting and immunofluorescence, microscopy techniques including high-content screening, and assays related to autophagy and cell death. The candidate is also expected to contribute to writing research and review manuscripts for publications.

Skills, Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate/Master’s degree in area of specialism and a PhD degree (or close to completion) in an appropriate subject such as in an area of Biological Sciences
  • In-depth practical knowledge of technical and scientific methods stated above gained through extensive laboratory experience;
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision but function as part of a team;
  • Ability to organise and manage own work load and demonstrate flexibility;
  • Proficiency in commonly used software packages;
