Background
The postholder will work in conjunction with another research fellow across two applied health research studies: the FUEL study and NAP SACC-UK.
The FUEL study - this is a National Institute for Health Research-PHR-funded mixed-methods study, which aims to evaluate the implementation and impact of the national School Food Standards and School Food Plan in secondary schools and their pupils. The study commenced in 2019 and school recruitment and data collection are ongoing. The study involves the collection of an extensive amount of data from schools, staff and pupils, which will be used to explore the school food environment and how supportive this is of healthy eating. The study also involves collecting qualitative data with staff and pupils in a small number of case-study schools. The postholder will work with the other Research Fellow to: complete all data collection in the wider school sample and in case-study schools; undertake data analysis; and write up the final study report and other outputs.
NAP SACC-UK - this is a National Institute for Health Research-PHR-funded multi-centre cluster randomised controlled trial, led by the University of Bristol. This trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an intervention in pre-school settings to increase physical activity, reduce sedentary time and improve the quality and quantity of nutritional intake of children. The trial has embedded process and economic evaluations. The postholder will work with the other Research Fellow to conduct the West-Midlands part of the trial. They will be responsible for recruitment and data collection in pre-school settings in Sandwell, and will undertake, or support other project staff to undertake study tasks.
Summary of Role
Across the two studies tasks will involve:
- Day to day study management including supporting study governance processes
- Recruitment of schools and early years settings
- Recruitment of study participants (FUEL = secondary school children, NAP SACC-UK = pre-school children and parents)
- Recruiting and managing staff to undertake fieldwork
- Qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
- Contributing to data entry, processing and storage
- Contributing to organising training events
- Reporting to PI (FUEL) and Local PI and Bristol-based trial team (NAP SACC-UK)
- Reporting to Study Steering Group and Co-investigator meetings
- Preparing presentations, reports and papers for publication
