Background

Duke-NUS Medical School (Duke-NUS) is Singapore’s only graduate medical school with Signature Research Programmes in Emerging Infectious Diseases, Health Services & Systems Research, Cancer & Stem Cell Biology, Cardiovascular & Metabolic Diseases and Neuroscience & Behavioural Disorders. SingHealth is the largest provider of medical services in Singapore, with a network of acute hospitals,national specialty centres, community hospitals and polyclinics offering over 40 clinical specialties. It aims to drive the transformation of healthcare and provide affordable, accessible and quality healthcare. Together, they form the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre (AMC).

The SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute (SDGHI) was launched in September 2018 as a joint institute under the AMC with a vision to advance health and well-being in Southeast Asia and beyond.The goals are to (1) improve health outcomes; (2) increase health security; and (3) strengthen health systems through partnerships with countries across the region.

SDGHI is organised around four programmatic areas (or Cores) - Policy, Research, Education and Clinical, to advance Global Health research and teaching efforts.Partnerships across 14 countries throughout Asia have been established, through which these Cores foster greater coherence and alignment of global health activities, act as a coordinating mechanism for partnerships with national, regional and global actors, and facilitate new areas of work that respond to pressing global health priorities.

Research Fellow, Global Health

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities which include planning, organising and conducting research studies within the overall scope of a research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate, including but not limited to the following: -

• Independently carry out the design and execution of global health research and programme support. This will include support to emerging programmes of work on Innovation Science for Global Health and Health Systems Enhancement.
• Write and review research papers, present research outcomes, conceptualise new ideas and develop plans for independent research which could have a considerable influence and impact on the relevant field attracting research funding.
• Provide support for external grant/protocol development, study design and management of research activities and programme work of the Institute.
• Contribute to occasional educational / instructional activities and project management.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to undergraduate / medical students and research assistants.
• Support regional collaborations, joint research and cross-country system enhancement efforts. This will include contributing to the Asian Global Health Alliance, which is a coordination platform for schools of public health in South Asia and South East Asia.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent in public health, epidemiology or related disciplines.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in global health programmes or research.
• Prior experience in low and middle-income contexts in Asia or elsewhere would be advantageous.
• Have a strong desire to advance global health capacity in Asia.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to research and related documentations.
• Possess track record of contributing to written outputs/reports/peer-reviewed publications.
• Have strong organisational abilities and experience in programme coordination.
• Able to work flexibly and independently.
• Proficient and competent in the suite of MS Office programmes.
