Research Fellow

Updated: 15 days ago
Location: Sheffield, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 11 Apr 2024

This post offers you an exciting opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary research team on an NIHR-funded project looking at the impact of interactive electronic technologies such as tablets and smartphones on young children's health and development.

You will be an ambitious postdoctoral researcher with mixed-methods skills and an interest in the early years.  Knowledge of early years development, physical activity, and motor skills measurements would be advantageous, as would experience working with parents, nurseries, or early years sector organisations.

Assisted by other members of the research team and research fellows who will be employed throughout the project, you will co-lead planning, data collection and analysis throughout the project.

You will also have the opportunity to engage with early years stakeholders from the public health and educational sectors, support dissemination through policy briefs, peer-reviewed publications and national and international conferences, as well as receive external research training.

As Research Fellow, you will support the project throughout its lifecycle and engage in the three work packages (studies) that comprise it:

Work package 1 involves a systematic review of the correlates of interactive electronic devices in young children.  Work package 2 will study the long-term relationship between using interactive electronic devices and emerging abilities in young children.  Lastly, work package 3 will use observations and interviews to understand young children’s interactive electronic device use in their home environment. Some travel will be required for data collection.

As this job involves working, or having regular contact, with children, if you are successful, you will be asked to apply for an Enhanced check with children’s barred lists through the Disclosure and Barring Service.  A criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from taking up the post, but its relevance to the duties of the role will need to be assessed before the appointment is confirmed.

We offer a diverse range of

benefits

and opportunities to pursue a rewarding and fulfilling career in a supportive environment.

You will be contractually enrolled into the

Teachers’ Pension Scheme

(TPS) – one of the largest and most generous defined benefit pension schemes in the country.

For this job, we particularly welcome applications from minority ethnic applicants who are underrepresented in this area at Sheffield Hallam.

The University may be able to sponsor the employment of international applicants in this role; this will depend on a number of factors specific to the individual applicant.
