We are seeking outstanding, creative researchers with the skills to explore the new physics of interactions between topologically structured light and structured matter emerging at nano- and picometre scales, with a view towards the development of disruptive light-enabled technologies - see “The Birth of Picophotonics” [Optics & Photonics News, Sept. 2023] .

You will join a major Programme sponsored by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council - becoming a member of a broader interdisciplinary research team with interests ranging from photonic metamaterials and toroidal electrodynamics to super-resolution imaging and optical nano-metrology - see www.nanophotonics.org.uk/niz/ .

You will hold a PhD* or equivalent qualification in Physics or another subject relevant to the field of optics/photonics, and proven experience in experimental optics/photonics research. Well organised and driven, you will demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills, and strong powers of communication, alongside a collaborative approach. Prior experience in computational modelling, the application of machine learning, and development of precise optical experiments and instrumentation will be advantageous.

As well as a world-class research environment, we offer benefits including a generous holiday allowance, access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subsidised health and fitness facilities, and the possibility of flexible working hours.

As a founding signatory of the Athena SWAN charter, and holder of a silver award, the University is committed to improving equality. We aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive, and we are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity.

Appointments will be made at the level of Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow, depending on experience.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

For Senior Research Fellow appointments, it is essential that you have several years of postdoctoral experience, encompassing project management and supervision of other research team members.

Appointments will be for up to 20 months from June 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

For informal enquiries please write to Prof Nikolay Zheludev ([email protected]) and Prof Kevin MacDonald ([email protected]).
