Introduction

The University of Southampton is committed to excellence in all we do, applying our insights and inventiveness to solve the most complex societal and environmental challenges. As a world-leading, research-intensive university, with a strong and high-quality educational offering, we are renowned for our innovation and enterprise and are within the top 1% of universities worldwide.

The role and about you

For our research project on thin-film electro-optic metasurface coatings for defence we are looking for a researcher combining skills in cleanroom nanofabrication with a good knowledge and background in experimental infrared, optics and/or nanoelectronics research.

The research will take place in our state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities located at the University of Southampton which hosts a range of advanced full-wafer fabrication tools such as Southampton’s DUV lithography (the only such system available in the UK’s academic research community) and our new 200 kV electron beam lithography system (the only such system currently installed in UK and Europe). Subsequent experimental studies will involve a very broad range of techniques including electrical, RF, microwave, infrared and optical domain characterisation methods available in our laboratories. Numerical and analytical modelling of electro-optical response of the developed materials platforms, using commercial Multiphysics software (Lumerical FTDT, Comsol), will form part of the activity. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in an active team with opportunities for guidance of PhD researchers and students, and for engaging closely with industry stakeholders and the UK defence & security research community.

What we can offer you

Working at the University of Southampton gives you access to a wide range of benefits in addition to our competitive rates of pay. Our core benefits include pension scheme membership; a generous annual leave allowance (supplemented by University closure days and public holidays) and excellent family leave arrangements (including maternity, paternity, adoption and parental leave). All our benefits can be viewed here. https://www.southampton.ac.uk/hr/services/benefits-explained/index.page

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work. We welcome applications from candidates who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment. We encourage applications from candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, people who identify as LGBTQ+; and people with disabilities. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates from working class, first generation Higher Education, the Global South and other underrepresented groups.

Committed to supporting our staff and students, we are open to a flexible working approach. We give full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly and those who have taken a career break.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
