An exciting opportunity exists for a Research Fellow to join the PRECEDE Consortium (www.precede.eu ), financed by the Volkswagen Foundation, focusing on the socio-economic and cultural drivers of populist vote. Under the guidance of the PI (Dr Lorenza Antonucci), you will link the emerging empirical findings from the Consortium to new conceptual models to understand populism. You will join a highly interdisciplinary consortium (University of Birmingham, Munster University, Exeter University, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and La Sapienza) and an international team of senior academic and 5 post-Doc Research Fellows. You will co-author academic outputs of the highest standards (e.g. working papers, journal articles and conference presentations); you will work both independently and in-team to disseminate our research within and outside academia.
We are looking for a researcher who has completed their doctorate and has an excellent theoretical and conceptual understanding of populism, particularly in relation to socio-economic inequality and precarity (labour market insecurity, financial insecurity etc), coupled with an understanding of data analysis. Excellent academic writing skills (demonstrated through published or unpublished work) are essential for this role. We particularly welcome interdisciplinary researchers working across fields (e.g. political sciences, social policy, economics, or sociology) and with an interest for advancing conceptual and methodological innovation in populist studies.
You will work with the Working Package Lead (Dr Lorenza Antonucci) and benefit from a range of opportunities for personal and professional development throughout the project (e.g. mentorship, training and academic skills development) offered both by the Consortium and by your institution.
- Assist the PI in reaching the research objectives of Working Package 2 on “The socio-economic and cultural drivers of populist vote”.
- Write theoretical and empirical outputs from our analyses that contribute to the interdisciplinary literature on populism, inequality and precarity
- Assist the rest of the team in analysing and interpreting comparative data from our online panel surveys and from existing datasets (e.g. European Social Survey).
The successful applicant will have (demonstrated by CV and Cover Letter):
- PhD in political sciences, political sociology, economics or related disciplines with strong theoretical and empirical components (essential)
- Ability in understanding and interpreting quantitative and statistical analyses, in particular survey data (essential)
- Track record in having presented work on populism in international conferences (preferable)
- Some track record in publishing in international refereed journals (preferable)
The closing date for applications is 5/9/2021 and we anticipate the candidate to start shortly after.
