We are seeking two highly motivated researchers in the field of silicon photonics to take up a role within the prestigious EPSRC funded project MISSION (Mid-Infrared Silicon Photonic Sensors for Healthcare and Environmental Monitoring), a major collaborative programme between the Universities of Southampton, York and Sheffield, the University Hospital Southampton and the National Oceanography Centre. The post holders will be based in the Silicon Photonics Group, in the Optoelectronics Research Centre (http://www.orc.soton.ac.uk ), and will carry out internationally recognised research into the implementation of photonic devices for gas detection and sensing in healthcare. The successful candidates will join an enthusiastic team of researchers working in the area of silicon photonics, utilising the state-of-the-art Zepler Institute Cleanroom Facilities (http://www.zeplerinstitute.com/facilities ) at the University of Southampton, UK. Working closely with project partners, both academic and industrial. The vision of MISSION is to play a leading role in driving innovation in photonic sensing by addressing challenges in detection of therapeutic drugs, cancer and green house gases.

The applicants must have a strong background in silicon photonics, electronics engineering, or physics. The applicants must also have a background in the design, fabrication and characterisation of photonic devices, with an aptitude for critical evaluation and interpretation of experimental data. Experience in using device modelling suites such as Lumerical, RSoft, Photon Design and Silvaco is desirable. It is also expected that applicants can provide evidence of the following:

  • The ability to work independently and a good team work attribute
  • A willingness and ability to assist with the supervision of postgraduate students
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills and proven track record in journal publications and conference presentations

These positions are full-time, fixed term up to 2.5 years duration.
