Research Fellow at the University of Southampton – Mid-IR Nonlinear Optics for Quantum Systems

Be a part of the University of Southampton, an institution in the top 6% of universities worldwide and one of the UK’s Russell Group research-intensive universities.

The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) is a world-leading photonics research centre with over 300 staff and students working to create innovative solutions for real-life problems in manufacturing, telecomms, defence, health care, renewable energy, and the environment. Within the ORC, the Optical Engineering & Quantum Photonics research group specialises in developing and manufacturing new photonic components for applications in quantum technology, integrated optical sensors, and laser optics. Working closely with our spin-out company, Covesion Ltd (www.covesion.com ), we pride ourselves on taking basic research to prototype and product, providing our staff with a solid foundation for a career in photonics.

We are seeking a talented Research Fellow to develop components for nonlinear optical conversion of mid-infrared wavelengths to the visible for use in upconversion imaging systems. This role will focus on developing PPLN waveguides for Mid-IR conversion and cover waveguide design, optical characterisation, and integration with wider system-level components such as pump lasers and single-photon detectors. As part of the UKRI Quantum Technology programme, this work features close engagement with other academic groups and industry.

Applications are encouraged from those with a strong background in physical sciences – optics, lasers & photonics. We are looking for a self-motivated researcher with good experimental skills that is willing to conduct research both independently and as part of a team.

Experience in nonlinear optics is highly desirable. A PhD or equivalent professional qualification is essential.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

This appointment is for a 12-month period, ideally starting in April 2024.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be directed to Prof Corin Gawith [email protected]

The application deadline is midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need assistance, call Recruitment on  +44 (0) 23 8059 2750, or email [email protected] . Quote the advert reference 2628124PN on all correspondence.
