As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is £27,924 for Grade 6 and £30,942 for Grade 7

Full time, fixed term contract until 31st March 2023 

Background

How does being sleepy or anxious affect our ability to interact with others? We're looking for a post-doctoral research fellow to help us answer this question.

The successful candidate will work on an exciting new grant funded by the Economic and Social Research Council on the impact of sleep deprivation and anxiety on social understanding and social functioning. They will spend the first 16 months of the grant with Andrew Surtees at the University of Birmingham and the final 4 months at the University of California-Davis, working alongside Andrew Todd.

We're keen to work with an experienced, skilled, and passionate candidate with a background in social cognition. Candidates with enthusiasm for supporting and developing students and Research Assistants are encouraged.

Summary of Role

The successful candidate will lead our research project on the impact of sleep deprivation and anxiety on social understanding and social functioning. They will complete an empirical programme, engage with internal and external collaborators, and ensure findings are shared with the academic community and the general public. 

Main Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as behavioural testing or eye-tracking
  • Analyse and interpret complex data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students and Research Assistants on research-related work
  • Deal with the problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines 

Person Specification

  • First degree in Psychology or a related field.
  • A PhD (complete or close to completion) relevant to the research area or equivalent qualifications (For Research Fellow post)
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme 
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
