Responsible AI UK (RAIUK) connects UK research to leading research centres and institutions around the world.  This way, the RAI UK is delivering world-leading best practices for AI-systems in ways that benefit people, society and the nation.

We seek a RAIUK Research Fellow for the project: “For the FATES of Africa: A co-developed pipeline for responsible AI in online learning across Africa”.

This project is driven by an equitable partnership across sectors and disciplines, with academic world leaders in responsible AI in education partnering with non-academic world leaders in educational technology for international development to focus on online learning in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The role

As Research Fellow on this project, your role will be critical to the success of this significant work that is pioneering at the levels of social justice, equitable research partnerships, and innovative research methods enabling these.  To do this, you will support the Principal Investigator with the coordination of the large international partnership in accordance with the project timescales.  You will travel to support cross-country field work and drive the publicity during the life of the project.  You will support ground-breaking qualitative, consultative research work, too, as co-author.

About you

It is essential that you have:

  • PhD (awarded or to be submitted within the next three months) in educational technology or digital education;
  • Detailed understanding and knowledge of educational technology or digital education;
  • Experience with designing and running workshops or events for stakeholder consultation; and
  • Demonstrable qualitative expertise in educational research to supplement the wider quantitative strengths in the team.

Desirably, you will have:

  • PhD in digital divides in education;
  • Knowledge of social justice and international development issues in digital education;
  • Experience of cross-sector collaboration in the area of educational technology and international development;
  • Experience with designing and running both online and in-person workshops or events for stakeholder consultation;
  • Experience in co-developing digital impact outputs, such as apps or toolkits; and

Further requirements this role can be found in the Job Description and Person Specification document.

What we can offer you

The successful applicant will have an exceptional opportunity to drive a project that is characterised by social justice in digital education.   At its core, the project is an equitable partnership between the Global North and Global South, using innovative research methods to enable cross-country and cross-sector collaboration to achieve fast track impact in online learning.

You will gain the opportunity to exercise and develop your leadership skills as you help to coordinate a large international partnership of Co-Investigators — as well as a pan-African network of stakeholders and participants in the consultation-based research work.

You will be able to strengthen your repertoire of qualitative skills, whilst gaining experience in world-leading mixed methods work with high contextual relevance and impact.

As this is a part-time role, you will enjoy flexibility to progress other aspects of your career and interests during the life of this project.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
