Mathematical Modelling of Neurological Conditions and the Optimization of Deep Brain Stimulation

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

We are seeking a research fellow in mathematical modelling to join an exciting and innovative international team of researchers and clinicians who are designing and implementing technology to alleviate chronic debilitating neurological conditions including chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. The post is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) through the Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre as part of the Brain Technologies theme.

The post will be based in the School of Mathematics & Physics at the University of Surrey. The postholder will be expected to work closely with mathematicians (Prof Anne Skeldon) and with other members of the research team including those at the Surrey Sleep Research Centre (Director, Prof Derk-Jan Dijk) and in the Engineering Science / Clinical Neurosciences in Oxford (lead, Prof Tim Denison). The postholder will be responsible for the development and analysis of mathematical models that describe the interactions between brain stimulation, brain oscillations, circadian rhythms of symptoms and sleep in people living with various neurological conditions.

About you

We are looking for a person with a PhD or equivalent experience in mathematics or a related discipline, and ideally with experience of collaborative interdisciplinary working. You will also have some experience in presenting your work to a wide range of stakeholders and a track record of publishing novel scientific research.

How to apply

The post can be either full-time or part time (at least 0.8) and is fixed term for a period of up to 34 months (full time equivalent).

To apply for this role, please upload a CV and cover letter with your application on the University of Surrey Website. For further information, please see the job description or for an informal discussion, please contact Prof Anne Skeldon ([email protected] ).
