Full time starting salary is normally in the range £31,406 to £40,927, with potential progression once in post to £43,434.

Background
This is a one-year charity funded innovative research project, aiming to improve person-centred nurse-led care for patients with progressive multimorbid illness in primary care. This project will be conducted in primary care services in Birmingham and enable local patients, families and services to benefit from a novel mobile application (“app”) of a person-centred outcome measure, a simple clinical decision support tool, and pilot implementation with potential for national roll-out.
The successful candidate is required to generate and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities for this research project, and will work within the School of Nursing, Institute of Clinical Sciences at the University of Birmingham under the supervision of Dr Ping Guo (Principal Investigator).
This post is ideal for a researcher with experience of health and social care research including survey studies and qualitative interviews. The post holder will be responsible for helping to develop study protocol and materials, obtain ethical approval, contribute to the design of a mobile app and clinical decision support tool, and deliver training for primary care nurses, support participant recruitment, facilitate data collection, data entry and data analysis. The post holder will write up the papers and help to organise a seminar for dissemination working with the PI and wider team.

Main Duties/Responsibilities
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
• Refine study protocol and relevant study materials, and apply for approvals
• Demonstrate good communication skills throughout the research process to co-ordinate study sites and provide on-going advice and support on informed consent and recruitment of participants
• Plan, manage and facilitate quantitative and qualitative data collection methods such as electronic/paper based data capture, face to face participant interviews as required in accordance with a study protocol
• Refine and pilot data collection tools and processes
• Be responsible for maintaining the study site files and study record systems
• Implement and work within the study protocol and ensure the study is run in accordance with regulatory frameworks
• Analyse and interpret data
• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
• To be able to engage and work with primary care staff at local sites and patient and public involvement group to ensure research is feasible, relevant and important
• Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all members of the core research team and with those in primary care services
• Undertake management/administration arising from the study
• Provide regular study updates to the PI and other key members of the research team and internal/external parties involved
• Meet study deadlines and ensure the study meets local targets regarding recruitment to time and target
• Manage, organise and attend study research meetings and events as required
• Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
• Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of the project leader
• Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

Person Specification
• Degree or equivalent in relevant healthcare subject area
• Doctorate in relevant healthcare subject area
• Working experience in the NHS or Higher Education in relevant healthcare subject
• Understanding of research methodology, both in qualitative and quantitative research paradigms
• IT literate and competent to a high level
• Strong understanding of databases and study documentation
• High level analytical capability, and ability to analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative data
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Knowledge of research specific regulations and guideline e.g., Research Governance and Good Clinical Practice
• Ability to write a good quality protocol
• Experience of obtaining ethical approval for research
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
• Working independently with moderate direct supervision
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
• Contribute to the planning and organising of the research project
• Aptitude for learning new skills
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Liaise with research staff and support staff on research-related matters
• Liaise with external collaborators on the research including with partners from the charitable and business sectors
• Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
