The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

Applications are invited for an infectious disease modeler to join the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology & Dynamics.

The successful candidate will develop epidemiological models to understand the risks and benefits of introducing maternal respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination in low- and middle-income countries. A new maternal RSV vaccine has been developed that has the potential to save the lives of infants from dying from RSV, but which may be potentially linked to a higher risk of preterm birth. This work will inform guidance from WHO about whether to use the vaccine.

The post-holder will work with Prof Mark Jit and will join a team of modellers, epidemiologists and economists at LSHTM and elsewhere (including in Kenya and South Africa) with a long track record of analysing the impact vaccines against RSV and diseases.

The post-holder will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic and relevant experience in mathematical modelling, health economics, epidemiology, statistics or another relevant discipline with a strong quantitative component. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed-term until 30 March 2025. The post is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is available from 01 May 2024.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale Grade 6 in the range £43,947 - £49,908 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London.

Applications should be made on-line via our jobs website . Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to [email protected] . Please quote reference EPH-EPED-2024-08.

The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as "Please see attached CV" will not be considered acceptable.

Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
