The University of Southampton is committed to excellence in all we do, applying our insights and inventiveness to solve the most complex engineering and environmental challenges. As a world-leading, research-intensive university, with a strong and high-quality educational offering, we are renowned for our innovation and enterprise and are within the top 1% of universities worldwide. The Maritime Engineering Research Group aims to explore and understand the behaviour of engineering systems in a maritime environment with a view to improving the integration of design, production, and operation, accounting for safety, economic, and societal viewpoints.

The Role and About You:

The adoption of Wind Propulsion Technology (WPT) is critical for the shipping industry to reach net-zero by 2050. By utilising wind as a propulsive energy source, CO2 (and GHG) emissions can be significantly reduced. Lowering the onboard energy storage burden (infrastructure, storage, and ongoing energy supply costs), the development of WPT is crucial in achieving net zero.

Working within a team of researchers and as part of an industrial consortium, in this post-doctorate research position, you will be responsible for designing, conducting, analysing, and evaluating results from a series of hydrodynamic experiments or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations about the adoption of WPT to ships for our recently funded Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) Round 4 project, led by a UK company Spaera.

We are looking for motivated candidates with knowledge or interest in any of the following: marine hydrodynamics, maritime engineering, ship resistance and propulsion, seakeeping and manoeuvring, towing tank experimentation, and marine CFD are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

What We Can Offer You:

You will have access to world-class facilities at the University of Southampton, including the 138x6x3.5m Boldrewood Towing Tank , which is the largest university towing tank in the UK. The University of Southampton views High-Performance Computing as a strategic enabler of its research mission and, over many years, has made significant investments in this area. You will also have access to the Iridis Computer Cluster, currently in its fifth generation and remains one of the largest computational facilities in the UK.

In addition to support, you will receive advice and guidance from industrial partners and project investigators (Dr. Townsend and Dr. Tezdogan ) and networking opportunities throughout the role. The candidate will be based in the Maritime Engineering group at the University of Southampton.

As a university, we strive to create an inclusive environment that fosters respect, equality, and opportunities for all. We believe our objectives are best achieved by reflecting society and are passionate about providing a workplace where you can freely be your authentic self.

Check out the staff benefits and why you should join us at The University of Southampton!

If you wish to discuss the role in more detail, please email Dr. Tezdogan at [email protected] or Dr. Townsend at [email protected] .
