Cranfield University’s world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships is creating leaders in technology and management globally. Learn more about Cranfield and our unique impact here .

Cranfield University School of Aerospace, Transport Manufacturing (SATM) and the Centre for Propulsion Engineering welcomes applications from aeronautical, aircraft, propulsion and mechanical engineers with expertise in aerodynamic design for aerospace applications.

The Centre for Propulsion Engineering, within SATM at Cranfield University, has a strong track record in power plant modelling and propulsion system performance simulation and experimental research. Research activities in the past 50 years cover virtually every aspect of the field including propulsion system integration and computational and experimental propulsion aerodynamics. Extensive participation in various EU and UK funded projects has strengthened and established the Centre as a key contributor to path breaking research while acquiring a peripheral view of the emergence of new technologies in the field. The successful candidate will join the Gas Turbine Technology Group within the Centre for Propulsion Engineering. This is a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of aircraft-engine integration and contribute to sustainable aviation advances. We are looking for enthusiastic highly motivated researchers to join our research group. You will have the opportunity to work closely with world leading researchers and industrial engineers on the aerodynamic design and analysis of aero-engine intake and exhaust systems. The work will also encompass considerable research effort on computational modelling of propulsion system integration and of aerodynamic performance under high-lift conditions. A collaborative part of the research will centre around working with colleagues who will evaluate the the relationship between the aerodynamic design and the acoustic characteristics for the intake and the exhaust.

You will hold a PhD (or close to completion) in Aerospace Propulsion, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Aerodynamics or related subject with a proven track record of publishing in high quality journals.

Good skills in engineering computing and programming are required and experience of optimisation methods would be beneficial. Ability to communicate clearly at a technical level and capability of clearly summarising objectives and achievements for briefing collegues and project partners is also essential.

In return, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development in this key research position, and will be at the forefront of world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.

Our Values

Our shared, stated values help to define who we are and underpin everything we do: Ambition; Impact; Respect; and Community. Find out more here. We aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together and realise their full potential.

Diversity and Inclusion

Our equal opportunities and diversity monitoring has shown that women and minority ethnic groups are currently underrepresented within the university and so we actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from these groups.

Flexible Working

We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role. Find out more here .
