Role Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for those with relevant knowledge and experience to join our Composites and Advanced Materials Centre to work on a multidisciplinary research project funded by Airbus Operations Ltd.

About the Role

This role will shape our Centre’s research, focusing on optimizing hybrid materials for next-gen aircraft landing gears. Addressing gaps in technology, it involves critical evaluation of fibre reinforced polymer composite structures, designing joining techniques, topological optimization for mass reduction, and assessing manufacturing impacts (including sustainability and life cycle assessment issues). The research concludes with evaluating optimized landing gear through project reviews, workshops, conferences, and academic publications, influencing the future of landing gear technology.

About You

We are seeking an ambitious and collaborative professional with a PhD (or close to completion) in a relevant field related to materials and structures. This individual will be responsible for developing and delivering research in areas such as materials selection and design, material characterisation and failure analysis, numerical modelling and simulation for topological optimisation, and testing of polymer composite materials and structures. You will have some experience in manufacturing fibre reinforced composite samples/structures and the project will culminate in production of a scale part to demonstrate feasibility of manufacturing the required geometry and performance of the structure.
