Full time, Fixed Term: The appointment is for 2 years in the first instance, starting 1st Sept 2022.

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work in the group of Professor Daren Caruana in the Department of Chemistry at University College London. The post is funded through an EPSRC Grant for a collaborative project between Professor Daren Caruana (UCL) and Space Foundry Inc. (USA). The Research Fellow’s project will be based in London, with regular in person or remote discussions with Space Foundry as required by the demands of the project.  The post holder will focus on the design, building and modification of atmospheric pressure plasma jet systems. The work will be focused on the investigation of chemical and physical changes of a variety of materials to atmospheric plasma. This will also include developing various deposition techniques and evaluating the resulting material using a variety of material characterization techniques, such as XPS, RAMAN, SEM, UV-Vis and electrochemistry.

The appointment is for 2 years in the first instance, starting 1st Sept 2022.

The successful candidate will have a PhD degree (or be about to be awarded a PhD) in, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering or Physics preferably with experience in building Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jets systems and investigating their chemical or physical properties. Experience in at least one of the following areas is also desirable: Materials characterisation, electrochemical analysis; Analysis of XPS data; analysis of surface wetting properties and analysis of plasma gases using emission spectroscopy. The post holder should have experience in drafting and submitting papers to peer-reviewed journals and day-to-day supervision of research students.

Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £32,217 to £33,958 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
