Job description
Our School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences has a large track record of translational research on surgical robotics and smart implantable devices. The research vision unifies multidisciplinary expertise across the King’s College, from the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences; to Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care; and Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences. With great focus on translation and delivering new technologies to the patients, the School’s research projects are deeply integrated with partner hospitals, such as Moorfields Eye Hospital and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
In this role, an experienced robotics engineer, with focus on mechanical design, manufacturing and system integration and a strong track record of working in collaborative teams, will (i) lead research activities focussed on implantable stoma devices, (ii) support and lead research developing robotic ophthalmic devices, and (iii) play a central role in translation of promising research outcomes to clinical use with clinical collaborators and industry partners.
We are looking for someone with a range of skills in design: using various design and mathematical modelling tools, and in manufacturing, possibly being experienced and familiar with the different 3d printing equipment and various manufacturing and post-processing processes such as CNC machining, etc. The post-doctoral researcher will perform preclinical research in robotics for ophthalmic surgery, especially designing a constructing a multi-degree of freedom robot using the concentric tube technology. The role holder will also perform and lead research in the design and construction of an implantable valve to make stomas continent.
The post holder will also provide training, assistance and advice to other workers and collaborators: they will advise, support and train internal staff and students in the design and execution of experiments relating to surgical robotics and implantable devices, including training on manufacturing equipment. The role will be a basis for first- and senior author publications on the development of innovative methodologies in this field as well as co-authoring user-led publications.
This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 2 years.
This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.
Key responsibilities
- To play a key research role in a programme of surgical robotics development
- To lead and ensure the smooth running and successful execution of research relating to stoma implantable devices
- To lead and ensure the smooth running and successful execution of research relating to new surgical robotics devices
- To support the translational research projects with their expertise in design, modelling, and manufacturing in the various stages of the project, from conception, to execution, validation and reporting, compatibly with the high publication standards of the King’s College London.
- Supporting the Quality Management System in the relation to the research projects carried out
- To compile timely and high quality reports of these studies
- As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, to perform, coordinate and supervise others (undergraduate and postgraduate students and postdoctoral engineers) in the design and construction of robotics solutions for surgical and implantable devices.
- To provide engineering, workshops and safety expertise to the research team
- To attend and, as appropriate, present research findings and papers at internal and external academic meetings, seminars and conferences and to contribute to the internal and external visibility of the department and its collaborators
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
