The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) is looking to recruit a research fellow in Open RAN Intelligent Network Automation. This exciting post will be researching advanced radio access network (RAN) technology in order to achieve network self-organisation. We focus on developing machine learning algorithms to optimise various KPIs of a O-RAN.

The focus of the project the post holder will contribute to, is mainly on developing machine learning algorithms, particularly reinforcement learning, to improve flexibility of 5G with O-RAN architecture. This project is a 1-year research and development work on O-RAN including machine learning algorithms, O-RAN RIC and xApps. The research is mainly carried out using simulation/emulation with some mathematical analysis, and the machine learning algorithms are to be implemented in Python.

ICS is the largest academic research institute in Europe specialising in all aspects of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). It is home to over 200 researchers with expertise in all communication and broadcasting systems and has developed the best in class large scale testbeds for research and innovation and enjoys the state-of-the-art lab and computing facilities.

Established in 2012, 5GIC is the world’s first dedicated centre in researching end-to-end aspects of 5G and works closely with national and international leading academic institutes and key industrial partners. In November 2020, 6GIC was officially launched with parallel research undertaken in both 5G+ and 6G for 2030+.

RAN technology, radio resource allocation and optimisation, machine learning are key skills needed and PhD with good quality publications in the field are important qualifications to have. The post holder will need to be able to work within in a team of researchers.
