The School of Mathematics & Physics at Queen’s University Belfast is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to support the delivery of the US-Ireland R&D Partnership project VIBRANT (Visible Light-wave Generation and Manipulation through Non-Linear Waveguide Technology)The vision for the project is to create a Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) with an integrated laser and second harmonic generation elements to deliver green light.

In this role you will take a lead in the selection, deposition (primarily by pulsed laser deposition), characterisation and testing of second harmonic generation materials such as barium titanate and lithium niobate to be subsequently micro transfer printed in a collaboration with the project partners in the other work packages to assist in the realisation of the PIC.

The post holder will be expected to undertake travel/trips to the collaborators during the post.

VIBRANT is a collaboration between Queen’s, Tyndall National Institute/Munster Technological University and Ohio State University and is co-funded by NI Department for the Economy, Science Foundation Ireland and the National Science Foundation.

The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet the following criteria:

  • A relevant degree in physical sciences or engineering.
  • Have or about to obtain) a PhD in a relevant subject area of ferroelectrics/optics/photonics.
  • Specific, relevant research experience to include:
    • Demonstrated expertise in the use of pulsed laser deposition of perovskite oxides such as ferroelectrics.
    • Demonstrated expertise in the characterisation of crystalline thin films with X-ray diffraction.
    • Demonstrated expertise in the use of photolithographic and/or electron beam lithography for the creation of either passive or active instruments/devices.
    • Demonstrated expertise in the electrical functional characterisation of non-linear materials.
  • Experience performing original research, demonstrated through a record of invention, original publications in top-tier journals, and conference papers and presentations.

This is a full time fixed term post available for up to 3 years. Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
