Duties and Responsibilities
Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in Neurogenetics in the Department of Clinical and Movement Neurosciences, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology under the supervision of Professor Huw Morris. This is an outstanding opportunity to work independently on the new MRC funded MD-GAP project linking genetics with pathology -  Defining and diagnosing neurodegenerative movement disorders through integrated analysis of Genetics and neuroPathology (MD-GAP). The project will involve cutting edge genetic analysis, developing new tools to understand and diagnose neurogeneration. The project will include genetics, quantitative pathology and machine learning. It will involve cross correlation between genetic risk, gene expression, pathology and clinical variation. This is a fast moving field with rapid development in single cell sequencing, publicly available datasets and machine learning tools likely to play a part in this project.
The post-holder will lead this project and will be a post-doctoral scientist with a broad scientific background and insight into genetics and the biology of neurogdegeneration. The post-holder will be expected to appraise scientific information and data, develop statistical analysis and drafting of scientific manuscripts, abstracts, posters and oral presentations for national and international meetings. This will require an ability to critically interpret data and synthesize complex ideas and express these aspects clearly in written and oral form. The post-holder at UCL will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with scientists at at UCL, University of Bristol and the Laboratory of Neurogenetics, National Institutes of Health, USA.
The post is available immediately and is funded by a grant from the MRC to December 2022 in the first instance.
Key Requirements
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant discipline and experience in genetics and/or molecular pathology and/or data driven approaches to pathology. The ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication is essential, as is the ability to organise own work without extensive supervision and to prioritise own work in response to deadlines. Strong problem solving abilities, a flexible approach to work, the ability to present research findings with authority and coherence to a variety of audiences, and previous scientific publications are also a requirement. IT proficiency at developer level (developing scripts / pipelines for data analysis e.g. in R, Python) is desirable.
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £32,217 - £33,958  per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis. If the PhD has not yet been granted, the final accepted version of the thesis must have been submitted to the degree-granting university by the start date in post.
