Manufacturing
Research Fellow in Graphene Paint Development for Hydrogen Embrittlement Protection Coatings (G-Coat)
Fixed Term Contract until 28 February 2023
Full time starting salary is normally in the range of £33,809 to £37,684 per annum, with potential progression up to £47,105 per annum
Location: Cranfield, Bedfordshire
We welcome applications from those with relevant knowledge and experience to join our team to work on an exciting project on paint development using graphene additives, working with National Grid on the future upgrade of the gas pipe network.
About the Role
The project is focused on advanced paint formulations using graphene. You will work under the supervision of Dr David Ayre and Professor Krzysztof Koziol in the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing at Cranfield University.
The research will be primarily experimental and will rely on state-of-the-art paint formulation, blending, surface adhesion and characterisation for the superior hydrogen embrittlement protection of steel gas network pipes.
About You
You will have a PhD degree (or close to completion), or equivalent, in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or closely related disciplines, and an advanced fundamental understanding of polymer coatings and encapsulation and wetting. You will have a demonstrable ability in paint formulations/modifications/blending, and a developing track record of independence, conducting high quality research under limited supervision and publishing in high quality journals. Experience of hydrogen permeability testing and working with graphene is desirable, but not critical. Proven high-level problem-solving skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail, are also essential in this role.
